Sivanesan and the idli shop
Sivanesan runs a humble, respected idli shop. Murugan grows up observing his father’s discipline, waking early, performing prayers, and preparing famous idlis. His mother Kasturi lovingly supports the family.
Murugan's ambition
Murugan leaves for Madras to pursue a better career. He becomes a successful executive in Vishnu Varadhan’s restaurant company and is engaged to Meera, Vishnu’s daughter.
Engagement tension
Conflict arises with Meera’s brother Ashwin, impulsive and troublemaking, who resents Murugan's innocence and his father’s admiration for him.
Family tragedy
Murugan learns of Sivanesan’s death and returns to the village with colleague Ramarajan to perform the rites. He reconnects with former love Kayal. Murugan’s mother Kasturi eventually dies from grief.
Idli shop dilemma
Murugan is offered to sell the shop to Mariyasami, a rival who wants to marry Kayal. Murugan refuses, tries to run the shop using his father’s methods, initially fails, then succeeds after following Sivanesan’s rituals and cooking techniques.
Conflict with Ashwin
Murugan cancels his wedding, angering Meera, Ashwin, and Vishnu. Ashwin fights Murugan but is defeated. Ashwin later shoots Murugan, who survives and refuses to retaliate violently, angering Ashwin further.
Mariyasami confrontation
Mariyasami asks for Kayal’s hand in marriage. She and her mother reject him, asserting she will marry Murugan. Mariyasami attacks but is humbled during the confrontation.
Shop destruction
Ashwin sets Murugan’s idli shop on fire, devastating Murugan. Meera confronts him for destroying the shop. Vishnu finally reprimands Ashwin. Murugan resolves to rebuild the shop without resorting to violence.
Rebuilding and reconciliation
Ramarajan helps run the shop. Ashwin reconciles and apologises, Meera accepts the situation. Murugan and Kayal rebuild the shop successfully. Murugan allows Ashwin a playful “punishment” stirring the idli batter, bringing laughter.
Happy ending
The idli shop is restored, the village enjoys the famous idlis again, and Murugan and Kayal’s love is celebrated along with the traditions and values passed down from Sivanesan and Kasturi.
